The Planning of a Menu

The Planning of a Menu

As we celebrate Nutrition Month in March, we want to celebrate the work that our Nutrition team, and in particular of our dedicated Registered Dietitians, by highlighting the processes in planning of a menu.

Menu planning in Long-Term Care Homes isn’t just about providing sustenance; it’s about nourishing the body and preferences of every Elder who lives in the Home. The goal is to create a dining experience that resonates with everyone. In April 2022, the Fixing Long-Term Care Act 2021, was introduced, with changes to regulations that provide Long-Term Care Homes additional flexibility, variety, and choice when planning a menu. In Lambton County, our Homes embrace the opportunity to offer a great variety of choices including seasonal, therapeutic, special occasions, and a la carte menus.

The main emphasis in menu planning is on communication between Elders and the people working in the Nutrition Department. Throughout the year, the Nutrition Supervisor hosts monthly meetings for Elders who live in the Home. These meetings are a great way to encourage discussion about the current menu, special events, new and exciting food items, and any questions, comments, or concerns about meal planning and service. The information gathered from Food Talk, dining audits, and the annual Elder feedback survey help to develop the menu and offer the Elders their desired choice and variety of foods.

Behind every wonderful seasonal menu lies a background of nutritional expertise. The Registered Dietitian reviews and analyzes the menu to not only ensure the menu tantalizes the taste buds but also provides essential nutrients for optimal health.

The menu is then presented to Residents’ Council for review and approval. The Elders are encouraged to provide continuous feedback throughout the menu cycle.

The County of Lambton Homes ensures all menus are available to Elders, their families and anyone interested by posting them on lambtoncares.ca website.

As you can see menu planning at the County of Lambton Homes is far more than a routine task; it’s a commitment to enhancing the quality of life for every Elder. By fostering open communication, embracing Elder feedback, and prioritizing nutrition, Lambton County Homes are working towards the best possible dining experience for everyone living and eating in the Homes.
